Embossing vs. Foil Blocking

Embossing vs. Foil Blocking

Our customers frequently ask our advice on which branding method they should choose for their coporate gifts, and two branding techniques that they often need help choosing between are embossing and foil blocking. Many of the same items can be branded using both these methods, and it can be a tough choice if you're not sure what each method entails. This blog will explain the differences between embossing and foil blocking, and tell you when each method is appropriate.

What is embossing?

Embossing is the process by which a pattern or logo is raised from the surface of a material, creating a three-dimensional, textured design. Debossing is the opposite - a pattern is pressed into the surface of a material. Both techniques can be used on paper, metal, leather and faux leather. Often, embossing is used as an all encompassing term to refer to both techniques.

Depending on the material being embossed, different embossing methods are used. Most rely on heat and pressure to ensure precision.

The term blind embossing is used to refer to embossing that does not include the use of ink or foil to highlight the embossed area. Therefore the relief of the surface is the only difference between embossed and non-embossed areas.

What is foil blocking?

Foil blocking is an alternative branding method that involves stamping foil onto a surface to create a shiny design. In the foil blocking process, heated metal blocks are used to transfer a thin layer of foil onto the material - no ink is used, making it distinct from other branding techniques.

Foil blocking is commonly carried out on materials such as paper, leather and faux leather, and is often seen on items such as diaries and notepads. Plastic can also be branded with this method.

Gold and silver foils are most commonly used, but other metallic and matt colours are available, including copper and white.

When to use embossing

Embossing is generally suited in subtle branding as it typically does not use any colours or dyes.

Use embossing if:

  1. You want your logo to look understated and "barely there".
  2. You are a well-known / heritage brand that wants to present a sophisticated brand image.
  3. You want your promotional gifts to have high perceived-value.

When to use foil blocking

Foil blocking gives a unique shiny effect to logos and branding, that will wow prospective customers.

Use foil blocking if:

  1. You are a modern or new brand and want to set yourself apart from your competitors.
  2. You want your logo to be bright, shiny and highly visible.
  3. You are branding a flat, smooth surface - as foil blocking can look unclear on textured surfaces.
