The Bay Area Council in Oakland California teamed up with ad agency Goodby Silverstein to develop an awareness campaign that would remind busy parents to communicate with their kids whenever possible, so that children's literacy skills would improve and they would reach their potential.
To remind parents to chat to their young children and ask them questions, they designed a range of child and baby products printed with ideas for things ask a child. Questions such as: 'What colours can you see?' and 'What rhymes with blue?', were printed on items like blankets, t-shirts, baby-grows and bath towels. These helpful products were distributed to families by clinics and hospitals who wanted to help the community.
The council also printed the prompts on bus-stop ads and billboards all over the city, so that people were constantly reminded of the importance of encouraging kids to speak, listen and understand.
The campaign's ultimate goal was to have all children on an equal literacy footing when starting school, but it also helped parents and kids to interact more, connect, and form a stronger bond. So these promotional gifts had a very positive effect on families and children, going to show that promotional products don't just benefit businesses!
