The WWF used promotional calendars in cleverly designed packaging to encourage big companies to switch off their lights and support Earth Hour in the Philippines in 2009. The candles were yellow in colour and were delivered to CEOs in black boxes that had been designed to look like the facades of high rise buildings. When the yellow candle was taken out of the box, it looked as though the lights had gone out! This design perfectly embodied the central message of Earth Hour, which emphasises the importance of conserving energy. With these candles businesses were better able to participate in Earth Hour, and as a result the Philippines was the top participating country, with support increasing by 260% from the previous year and 650 towns and cities turning off their lights.
