Vodafone wanted to let customers know that they had lowered their international call rates, and in collaboration with Oglivy & Mather Mumbai they
designed promotional rulers to spread the message with the campaign entitled "Like an Inch Away".
Instead of printing the rulers with normal measurement markings, the company replaced the inch marks with pictures of landmarks from across the world, including Russia's Kremlin and Brazil's Christ the Redeemer Statue. They also printed the rulers with the slogan: "Nothing's far anymore. Lower international call rates from Vodafone" and sent the rulers out to their clients. The design clearly conveyed the company's message, whilst the ruler was also still a functional gift for the recipients.
Vodafone's rulers cost less than 3$ per piece to make, and they were well worth the money as they stayed on people's desks and promoted the brand well into the future.
