Capcom, a Japanese video games developer, wanted to develop a far-reaching promotional campaign for the release of their new game, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles. Apart from using print and banner adverts in their campaign, they also decided to give away promotional t-shirts to players of the new game at Comic Con.
To make the t-shirts original and exciting for gaming enthusiasts, they designed the world’s first reversible zombie t-shirts. Zombie faces were printed on the inside of the shirts, so that when they were pulled over the wearers’ heads, the players looked like characters from within the game!
As a result, every gameplay reservation slot was booked up well in advance, and there were huge lines of people queuing up on the day to play the game and to get their free t-shirt. In the end, 40,000 t-shirts were ordered as opposed to the original 3,500 they thought they would need.
Not only were the t-shirts great fun for gamers on the day, but they also worked well as long-lasting gifts that gained plenty of repeat-use, as the scary design stays hidden away on the inside when wearers are just going about their day-to-day business.
Since Capcom first used the design, this way of printing t-shirts has been mimicked countless times to promote other products, showing that printed t-shirts really are clever promotional gifts!
