Canadian photographer Justin Poulsen wanted to advertise his services to potential clients and convey the message that, with his photography skills, they would be made to look great and stand out. In fact, he would make them 'stand out like a sore thumb'.
Taking this familiar idiom literally, Poulsen decided to market his business using promotional USB flash drives that had been shaped and coloured to look like severed thumbs!
He made the flash drives from moulds of his own thumb and painted them to look exactly like they'd just been sliced off someone's hand, before distributing them with his 'stick out like a sore thumb' tagline. The USBs not only caught the attention of the recipients who received them, but also demonstrated Poulsen's artistic talent.
